Origins: How the Program Began

The Sisterhood Worldwide Program launched in 2008 during a press delegation to Egypt. Led by Wafa Kanan, the delegation raised thousands of dollars on the spot to fund learning programs at the Ali Bin Abi Taleb Orphanage in Alexandria, Egypt. Kanan promised to return in one year’s time to offer further support. She and her team made good on that promise.

Douaa Mohammed, the Sisterhood Program's initial grantee at the orphanage, was the recipient of mentoring programs, computers, entrepreneurial workshops and educational scholarships.

"Have you ever had promises made and then broken? It happens a lot with orphans. People make promises and never come through. We wondered if this was the case with Wafa Kanan. She promised she would be back with help. And she did. Her commitment to us is the reason my heart is open and filled with love and hope. She’s a sister and a hero."

- Douaa Mohammed, 16, orphan since birth.
